Compositional Coordination for Multi-Robot Teams with Large Language Models

Abstract-- Multi-robot coordination has traditionally relied on a mission-specific and expert-driven pipeline, where natural language mission descriptions are manually translated by domain experts into mathematical formulation, algorithm design, and executable code. This conventional process is labor-intensive, inaccessible to non-experts, and inflexible to changes in mission requirements. Here, we propose LAN2CB (Language to Collective Behavior), a novel framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) to streamline and generalize the multi-robot coordination pipeline. LAN2CB transforms natural language (NL) mission descriptions into executable Python code for multi-robot systems through two core modules: (1) Mission Analysis, which parses mission descriptions into behavior trees, and (2) Code Generation, which leverages the behavior tree and a structured knowledge base to generate robot control code. We further introduce a dataset of natural language mission descriptions to support development and benchmarking. Experiments in both simulation and real-world environments demonstrate that LAN2CB enables robust and flexible multi-robot coordination from natural language, significantly reducing manual engineering effort and supporting broad generalization across diverse mission types.



HORUS: A Mixed Reality Interface for Managing Teams of Mobile Robots

-- Mixed Reality (MR) interfaces have been extensively explored for controlling mobile robots, but there is limited research on their application to managing teams of robots. This paper presents HORUS: Holistic Operational Reality for Unified Systems, a Mixed Reality interface offering a comprehensive set of tools for managing multiple mobile robots simultaneously. HORUS enables operators to monitor individual robot statuses, visualize sensor data projected in real time, and assign tasks to single robots, subsets of the team, or the entire group, all from a Mini-Map (Ground Station). The interface also provides different teleoperation modes: a mini-map mode that allows teleoperation while observing the robot model and its transform on the mini-map, and a semi-immersive mode that offers a flat, screen-like view in either single or stereo view (3D). We conducted a user study in which participants used HORUS to manage a team of mobile robots tasked with finding clues in an environment, simulating search and rescue tasks. This study compared HORUS's full-team management capabilities with individual robot teleoperation. The experiments validated the versatility and effectiveness of HORUS in multi-robot coordination, demonstrating its potential to advance human-robot collaboration in dynamic, team-based environments.


Multi-Robot Coordination with Adversarial Perception

This paper investigates the resilience of perception-based multi-robot coordination with wireless communication to online adversarial perception. A systematic study of this problem is essential for many safety-critical robotic applications that rely on the measurements from learned perception modules. We consider a (small) team of quadrotor robots that rely only on an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the visual data measurements obtained from a learned multi-task perception module (e.g., object detection) for downstream tasks, including relative localization and coordination. We focus on a class of adversarial perception attacks that cause misclassification, mislocalization, and latency. We propose that the effects of adversarial misclassification and mislocalization can be modeled as sporadic (intermittent) and spurious measurement data for the downstream tasks. To address this, we present a framework for resilience analysis of multi-robot coordination with adversarial measurements. The framework integrates data from Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) and the learned perception model for robust relative localization and state estimation in the presence of adversarially sporadic and spurious measurements. The framework allows for quantifying the degradation in system observability and stability in relation to the success rate of adversarial perception. Finally, experimental results on a multi-robot platform demonstrate the real-world applicability of our methodology for resource-constrained robotic platforms.


Bi-CL: A Reinforcement Learning Framework for Robots Coordination Through Bi-level Optimization

In multi-robot systems, achieving coordinated missions remains a significant challenge due to the coupled nature of coordination behaviors and the lack of global information for individual robots. To mitigate these challenges, this paper introduces a novel approach, Bi-level Coordination Learning (Bi-CL), that leverages a bi-level optimization structure within a centralized training and decentralized execution paradigm. Our bi-level reformulation decomposes the original problem into a reinforcement learning level with reduced action space, and an imitation learning level that gains demonstrations from a global optimizer. Both levels contribute to improved learning efficiency and scalability. We note that robots' incomplete information leads to mismatches between the two levels of learning models. To address this, Bi-CL further integrates an alignment penalty mechanism, aiming to minimize the discrepancy between the two levels without degrading their training efficiency. We introduce a running example to conceptualize the problem formulation and apply Bi-CL to two variations of this example: route-based and graph-based scenarios. Simulation results demonstrate that Bi-CL can learn more efficiently and achieve comparable performance with traditional multi-agent reinforcement learning baselines for multi-robot coordination.


Inverse Submodular Maximization with Application to Human-in-the-Loop Multi-Robot Multi-Objective Coverage Control

We consider a new type of inverse combinatorial optimization, Inverse Submodular Maximization (ISM), for human-in-the-loop multi-robot coordination. Forward combinatorial optimization, defined as the process of solving a combinatorial problem given the reward (cost)-related parameters, is widely used in multi-robot coordination. In the standard pipeline, the reward (cost)-related parameters are designed offline by domain experts first and then these parameters are utilized for coordinating robots online. What if we need to change these parameters by non-expert human supervisors who watch over the robots during tasks to adapt to some new requirements? We are interested in the case where human supervisors can suggest what actions to take, and the robots need to change the internal parameters based on such suggestions. We study such problems from the perspective of inverse combinatorial optimization, i.e., the process of finding parameters given solutions to the problem. Specifically, we propose a new formulation for ISM, in which we aim to find a new set of parameters that minimally deviate from the current parameters and can make the greedy algorithm output actions the same as those suggested by humans. We show that such problems can be formulated as a Mixed Integer Quadratic Program (MIQP). However, MIQP involves exponentially many binary variables, making it intractable for the existing solver when the problem size is large. We propose a new algorithm under the Branch $\&$ Bound paradigm to solve such problems. In numerical simulations, we demonstrate how to use ISM in multi-robot multi-objective coverage control, and we show that the proposed algorithm achieves significant advantages in running time and peak memory usage compared to directly using an existing solver.


Leveraging Untrustworthy Commands for Multi-Robot Coordination in Unpredictable Environments: A Bandit Submodular Maximization Approach

We study the problem of multi-agent coordination in unpredictable and partially-observable environments with untrustworthy external commands. The commands are actions suggested to the robots, and are untrustworthy in that their performance guarantees, if any, are unknown. Such commands may be generated by human operators or machine learning algorithms and, although untrustworthy, can often increase the robots' performance in complex multi-robot tasks. We are motivated by complex multi-robot tasks such as target tracking, environmental mapping, and area monitoring. Such tasks are often modeled as submodular maximization problems due to the information overlap among the robots. We provide an algorithm, Meta Bandit Sequential Greedy (MetaBSG), which enjoys performance guarantees even when the external commands are arbitrarily bad. MetaBSG leverages a meta-algorithm to learn whether the robots should follow the commands or a recently developed submodular coordination algorithm, Bandit Sequential Greedy (BSG) [1], which has performance guarantees even in unpredictable and partially-observable environments. Particularly, MetaBSG asymptotically can achieve the better performance out of the commands and the BSG algorithm, quantifying its suboptimality against the optimal time-varying multi-robot actions in hindsight. Thus, MetaBSG can be interpreted as robustifying the untrustworthy commands. We validate our algorithm in simulated scenarios of multi-target tracking.


Auction Mechanism Design for Multi-Robot Coordination

The design of cooperative multi-robot systems is a highly active research area in robotics. Two lines of research in particular have generated inter- est: the solution of large, weakly coupled MDPs, and the design and im- plementation of market architectures. We propose a new algorithm which joins together these two lines of research. For a class of coupled MDPs, our algorithm automatically designs a market architecture which causes a decentralized multi-robot system to converge to a consistent policy. We can show that this policy is the same as the one which would be produced by a particular centralized planning algorithm.


A Loosely-Coupled Approach for Multi-Robot Coordination, Motion Planning and Control

Deploying fleets of autonomous robots in real-world applications requires addressing three problems: motion planning, coordination, and control. Application-specific features of the environment and robots often narrow down the possible motion planning and control methods that can be used. This paper proposes a lightweight coordination method that implements a high-level controller for a fleet of potentially heterogeneous robots. Very few assumptions are made on robot controllers, which are required only to be able to accept set point updates and to report their current state. The approach can be used with any motion planning method for computing kinematically-feasible paths. Coordination uses heuristics to update priorities while robots are in motion, and a simple model of robot dynamics to guarantee dynamic feasibility. The approach avoids a priori discretization of the environment or of robot paths, allowing robots to "follow each other" through critical sections. We validate the method formally and experimentally with different motion planners and robot controllers, in simulation and with real robots.


Distributed Auction-Based Initialization of Mobile Robot Formations

The field of multi-robot coordination, specifically robot formation control, is rapidly expanding, with many applications proposed. In our previous work, we considered the problem of establishing and maintaining a formation of robots given an already connected network. We now propose a distributed auction-based method to autonomously initialize and reorganize the network structure of a formation of robots.
